The batting tee is one of my favorite equipment in baseball. In my early years, I didn’t use my tee regularly, and for that reason, I was not good at hitting.
After a time, one day I was in a training session and my coach told me “If you want to make a better hitter use the batting tee in your daily training section and after the training(in your home garage or garden).
I improved my batting skills using a batting tee. However, one day while hitting off the tee in my garage, it broke and I couldn’t afford a new one. So, I decided to fix it myself.
I have decided to take on a challenge and fix my broken batting tee myself, even though I initially thought it might not be a good idea. I am looking forward to learning a new skill and enjoying the process. However, if you have the budget to purchase a new tee, it may be a better option than attempting to fix it yourself.
Still, if you want to fix a broken batting tee by yourself, I will not be stopping, although I will provide a complete guide on how to fix a broken batting tee. because I have faced their situation and know this is a challenge for you.
How to Fix a Broken Batting Tee? A Step-by-Step Guide
The first step in fixing a broken batting tee is to assess the extent of the damage. Common issues include cracks or splits in the tee’s base, bent or broken tubing, or a malfunctioning height adjustment mechanism. Look closely at the tee and identify any areas that need attention.
Notice Title
If you can afford to buy the new batting tee, I highly recommend it. I say this because I understand the difficulties of fixing a broken tee. But in my way, I always try to learn new skills, so I repair this tee. however, this is not an issue for me.
Once you’ve identified the problem areas, gather the necessary tools and materials to make the repairs. This is easy if you know how to use the tools or drills.
In my case, the T-shaped connector broke at the base where it meets the tube. Fortunately, the lower part of the tube snapped smoothly, making everything a little easier.
I decided to attach the steel plate to the base and tighten it with the washers to secure it in the future. In the original design, they used rubber to provide reinforcement. However, over time, rubber can tear. But other hand steel doesn’t break off.
Make a list of the tools when I used to fix it.
Step – 01
Material Needed:
- WD-40
- Vice
- Drill Bits(5/8 or 3/8 inches)
- Adjustable Wrench
- Steel Plate(16 gauge)
- 4 nuts and bolts(3/8 diameter and 1.5 length)
- 8 fender washers(3/8 inch)
- 1 fender washer(5/8 inch)
Step – 02
In the next step, you carefully take the tube and Inspect the tube that separated from the base, and clean the bottom of the tube. Then you will see that the bolt will be paired with the tube though it should be with the base. It’s important to be gentle when removing a bolt or nut from a tube.
If you apply too much pressure, the bolt or nut could break inside the tube, which can cause a big problem. To avoid this, spray WD-40 on the bolt or nut and inside the tube, and make sure to confirm the size of the bolts and nuts you’ll need.
Step – 03
Once you are ready to replace the old bolts and nuts in the tube with new ones, you should first remove the old ones. To do so, clamp the tube in a vice and tighten it enough to make it easier to remove the bolts with a wrench.
Be careful not to apply too much pressure to the tube while securing it with the vice, as this can damage the tube. Once the tube is securely fastened, use a wrench to remove all the old bolts and nuts from the bottom of the tube.
Step – 04
First, remove all old bolts and nuts and confirm their size. Next, take the 16 gauge steel plate and join it with the tube. Find the center of the plate and the diameter of the bottom of the tube. Then, using a 5/8-inch drill bit, make a hole in the center of the steel plate.
After that, ensure that the tube is securely fastened by using a fender washer. This will help to make the tube more secure in the future.
Step – 05
After that, you joined the steel plate with the original tee base. In this step, you make sure the steel plate is smaller than the original tee base. Then you hole each corner of the steel plate with the help of a 3/8-inch drill bit. After that, your the steel plate as the frame of the reference and mark out the same point in the original base tee.
Then you use a bit more drill and hole the base tee and join the steel plate with the help of bolts and nuts. In the future, make sure to use the fender washer to more secure the base.
Follow these simple steps to fix a broken batting tee on your own.
How Does the Batting Tee Long-Last?
When someone buys a new baseball or softball tee, they may ask about the product’s durability. It’s important to remember that a tee is not just a decorative piece for the home, but a piece of equipment for training.
While it’s impossible to predict the exact lifespan of the tee, certain things can be done during training sessions to ensure that it lasts longer. To ensure the longevity of your batting tee, you can follow these tips.
- Storage: Store your batting tee indoors when not in use, preferably in a dry and sheltered area. Exposure to extreme temperatures, sunlight, and moisture can degrade materials over time.
- Quality Construction: Invest in a batting tee made of durable materials such as heavy-duty rubber, sturdy metal, or high-grade plastics. Look for tees that are built to withstand repeated use and outdoor conditions.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean your batting tee to remove dirt, debris, and any build-up that could weaken its structure. Use mild soap and water to wipe down the tee, and avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the material.
- Proper Adjustment: Adjust the height and position of the tee correctly to minimize strain on the components. Avoid forcing adjustments beyond the tee’s recommended limits, as this could weaken or damage the mechanism.
- Transportation: If you need to transport your batting tee, handle it with care and avoid dropping or mishandling it. Consider investing in a carrying case or bag to protect the tee during travel.
Is Repair the Broken Batting Tee Worthy?
The important thing to identify is whether the broken tee can be fixed easily and quickly, without requiring too much time. If it can be fixed easily, then you can repair it, otherwise it is not recommended.
I always try to handle things on my own, so if I encounter a broken tee, I try to fix it myself. This way I can save my investment and also learn new skills, such as using a power drill.
