1. Lemon Peel Ball

In the early days of baseball, many pitchers made their balls. These balls were made of old rubber core, melted shoes, wrapped yarn of leather, and fish eyes.
However, these balls were different in size and weight, shape, and the manufacturing process to make the baseballs. On the other hand, these days popular baseball designs were a “Lemon Peel Ball”.
Lemon peel balls were famous for their distinct four-line stitched design. In addition, these balls were darker and smaller, and their weight was less than others, so they traveled further and had higher bounce.
2. Live Ball And Dead Ball
After fifty years many teams decided the regulate the weight of baseball. So in the 1850s the New York and around teams met and attempted to standardize the weight of the baseball, which should range the ball weight from 5.25 to 6 ounces and have a circumference is 8 to 11 inches.
During this time, baseball was in various forms and completely homemade, however, two types of baseball were popular in the world.
Live balls which contain more rubber and fully tighter winding travel faster than other balls. On the other hand, the ball with less rubber and looser winding didn’t travel faster than the live ball also known as the Dead ball.
3. Figure-8 Baseball Design
After 8 years, in the 1858s harwood produced by first figure-8 balls in the baseball world. This company was the first American baseball manufacturing company.
Also, we know that figure-8 balls are the same as today’s MLB balls because the stitches are lined up in the form of 8 figures.
4. Cork-core Ball
In the 1910s, the cork-core ball was invented. These balls were capable of hitting farther and faster than rubber core balls. However, they were only used for a few years.
In 1920 there were a couple of changes in these balls. Then the ball was made in machine winders and used high-quality Australian yarn. In this change, the balls help the batters to hit the ball farther, and for that reason, the game was causing high scouring.
In 1925 the cushioned cork ball was produced. In these balls, the cork core covers the black rubber and then an extra layer of red rubber.
Nine years later, finally, in 1934 the National League and American League decided the standardize the baseballs. They agreed on this point that the ball will be made by:
- Cushioned cork.
- Used two-layer yarn for wrappings.
- One layer in rubber cement coating.
- Then two more layers used yarn for wrapping.
- The final outer layer is covered by horsehide.
5. World War II Cork Ball
During World War II cork and rubber were not common materials, so the United States banned these types of materials that were not good for war.
Then the batala shells(a particular type of tropical tree) were used to make baseballs in 1943.
After one year, 1944 was the introduction of synthetic rubber that was used to make baseballs, and this resulted in these rubber baseballs returning to normal.
6. Modern MLB Baseball
Baseball design has stayed the same, but horsehide was replaced with cowhide in 1974.
In 1976, MLB ended the contract with Spalding and shifted to Rawlings to manufacture the modern baseball. Since this year baseball has remained the same, there hasn’t been a major change in these balls.
